Torrere docs · Cooking from a recipe
Torrere shows a recipe one step at a time
Torrere's cook mode shows one card at a time, with Back and Next. Before each part of the dish there's a card listing everything that part needs, with amounts in your units. If the recipe bakes, heating the oven is moved to where it belongs. You can keep talking to Torrere while you cook, and when a change arrives you stay on the step you were on.
Torrere opens cook mode from two places
The Cook button sits at the top of the Torrere app, next to Share and New, whenever the recipe has at least one step. Every change card in the conversation also has Get Cooking, beside Ingredients. Both open the newest version of the recipe, not the version that card describes.
Cook mode takes the place of the conversation, and the message box stays underneath it. The × at the top goes back to the conversation.
Torrere puts what to get out before each part
Each part of a dish in Torrere, the sauce or the dough, say, gets a card before its steps headed "Get this out". It lists every ingredient that part needs, with its amount, in your units. When one part's steps use another part, Torrere puts the part that's needed first.
The amounts live on these cards. The step cards show the step's wording, converted to your units, and no ingredient list of their own.
Torrere heats the oven at the right moment
If the recipe says to preheat, Torrere moves that step to the front, or to just after the last wait of an hour or more before the oven is used, so the oven isn't running through a long rest. The step keeps the recipe's own wording.
If the recipe bakes at a stated temperature and never says to heat the oven, Torrere adds a card that says "Heat the oven to" that temperature, and the card says it was added by the app rather than taken from the recipe. With no temperature in the recipe, Torrere adds nothing.
Torrere tells you when a recipe runs long
When the longest stated time in a recipe is an hour or more, or its stated times add up to 90 minutes or more, Torrere's first card says roughly how long the recipe runs from there to the end. It adds "most of it waiting" when one of those waits is an hour or longer.
Torrere keeps your place when the recipe changes
You can type to Torrere while you cook. Each message carries the step on screen, and the reply shows in a strip above Back and Next.
When a change rewords or moves steps, Torrere finds the step you were on and keeps you there. If that step was removed, you land at the same position in the recipe. If you're past the first card, "Recipe updated, check previous steps" shows for a moment, because an earlier step may have changed.
Torrere keeps your place when you close and reopen cook mode. It doesn't keep it through a reload of the app.
Torrere changes servings from inside cook mode
The servings button at the top of Torrere's cook mode shows "Serves" and a number, or the recipe's own unit when it has one, like egg bites or 9-inch pies. It opens a strip of numbers, and moving along it previews every amount on the cards. Update makes the change. The button appears only when the recipe says how many it serves. How servings and scaling work has the rest.
Torrere keeps the screen on where the device allows it
When cook mode opens, Torrere asks the device to keep the screen awake, on the web and in the iPhone and Android apps. If the device refuses, the top of cook mode says "screen may dim". If the device can't do it at all, Torrere shows nothing and the screen dims as it normally would.
Torrere times each step
Every step card except the "Get this out" cards has a timer button. Timers says how they read the step and when they ring.
