Torrere reads a photo of a recipe card

Checked against the app on .

Take a picture of a recipe card, a cookbook page or a handwritten note, attach it to a message in Torrere, and send it. Torrere reads what it can see and writes the recipe in the same turn: the title, what it serves, the ingredients and the steps, in the order the card gives them. Anything it can't read, it asks about, with likely answers to tap. Reading photos is part of Chef.

Torrere reads up to 4 photos in one message

A recipe that runs over the back of the card, or across two pages of a book, can go as up to 4 photos in one Torrere message, and Torrere reads them together as one recipe. Add them one at a time with the photo button next to the message box. Photos work on the start screen and inside a recipe you already have open, so "add the icing from this card" works too. Any text you send with the photos is you talking to Torrere about them, and Torrere takes it into account.

Torrere asks about what it couldn't read

Torrere writes down what's on the card first, then asks about anything it couldn't read or that isn't there: a step cut off at the edge, no serving count, an amount it can't make out, a temperature with no unit. Each question comes with two to five likely answers to tap, plus Other and Choose for me. Torrere doesn't guess an amount and carry on as if it had read one.

Torrere doesn't keep your photo

Torrere reads a photo and then throws it away. What it keeps is a record that a photo was read: its size, its dimensions and a fingerprint, for 90 days. Before reading, Torrere's server removes the photo's metadata itself, including any location the phone wrote into it.

Torrere resizes photos for you

The Torrere app resizes each photo so its long edge is at most 1600 pixels and saves it as a JPEG, so you don't need to do anything to a photo first. Torrere's server takes JPEGs up to 2 MB each, up to 1600 pixels on the long edge, and says which photo it refused and why when one doesn't fit.

Torrere reads photos on Chef

Reading a recipe from a photo is part of Chef, Torrere's subscription, on the web and in the apps, and it's included in Chef's free week. It isn't part of the free cooking the phone apps come with. Without Chef, the photo button shows as locked, and tapping it says what Chef adds. Subscription says what each plan includes.
